The Bike Shop Cycling Team had a lot of momentum headinginto the second full month of the racing calendar.  May 3rd marked the fourth event ofthe BBC Team Racing Series with the Online Auto Connection Road Race inLangford.  The A event saw it’s largest fieldof the season show up, and John McClory contested the field sprint with astrong 8th place finish with Larry Watkins finishing in the top 20places as well.  In the B race, VinceLorenz came across the line first after an impressive sprint from long-rangewhich also moved him into first place in the overall GC.  Allen Erb (5th) and Adam Trost (9th)finished among the top spots to help the B team retain the overall lead in theseries.  Michael Cormier, put in anotherstrong race, but was caught up in a late-race pile-up   whichresulted in a separated shoulder and a torn ligament.  He’s already undergone a successful surgeryon the shoulder and the team hopes to have him back in August.

On May 10th, Grand Island was the site for the secondIndividual Time Trial of the season. Larry Watkins posted the teams quickest time with an impressive 29:16which was good enough for a second place finish in the A event.  Adam Trost continued his impressive TT formwith a time of 29:59, good enough for 5th place among the Briders.  Other top 10 finishes in the Bfield were Allen Erb (6th place; 31:16), Craig Polston (7thplace; 31:53), Vince Lorenz (8th place; 31:59), and Tom Wiechmann(10th place; 32:22).

The big event of the month took place in Syracuse where a number of The Bike Shopracers performed well during the 3-event stage race held May 16thand 17th.  Adam Trost took 9thplace in the GC of the Cat 5 U35 which was highlighted by an impressive win inthe 3-mile TT with a time of 6:58:93. Rick Ferro continued his improved form with a solid 13th placein the GC of the Cat 5 35+ event.  Hisweekend included a 9th place finish in Saturday’s white-knucklecriterium, and a 13th in the Song Mountain Road Race.  Vince Lorenz and Allen Erb also hadimpressive finishes in the weekend’s centerpiece event with finishes of 4thplace and 11th place respectively. Finally, Craig Polston finished 13th in Saturday’s Cat4criterium.  It was a great weekend ofracing and some great results for The Bike Shop Cycling Team.

There was no BBC event for the weekend of the 23rd.  However, The Corning Circuit Race in PaintedPost, NY offered a quality race with a full field of 50 racers in the Cat 4/5event.  Vince Lorenz finished the daywith a solid 9th place finish with pacing coming from fellowteammates Larry Watkins (20th) and Allen Erb (25th).

The final race of the month came in Boston, NYwhere the BBC hosted the Rice Hill Road Race. Rice Hill represented the first true climbing course of the season forthe BBC and the team was up for the challenge against a full field of 50 ridersin the B event.  Vince Lorenz maintainedhis place at the top of the General Classification with a strong 4thplace finish, limiting his losses to Lance Johnson, his main rival in the GC,who came across in 2nd place. Craig Polston took 5th, with Allen Erb attacking the race’s primarychase group in the final meters to take 8th.  Adam Trost finished the day in 11thposition.  Rick Ferro, who responded wellto the early attacks and was among the leaders early in the race, finished in12th place.  In the A seriesrace, Larry Watkins finished the day with an 8th place finish, moving him into 3rd place in the series’ overall GC, just 6 pointsout of 2nd.

Moving into June, The Bike Shop maintains the points lead inthe B series Team standings.  The teamalso holds 4 of the top 6 spots in the GC with Vince Lorenz holding a slimmargin (6 points) over Tom’s Lance Johnson. Craig Polston moved up to 3rd, Allen Erb is tied for 4th,and Adam Trost is up to 6th in the points standings.  In the A series, Larry Watkins (3rd)will look to maintain his position near the top of the standings.  Teammate John McClory moved up into the top10 with another strong month.  He’ll lookto move further up the standings at the end of the month with the only BBCevent on the calendar at the Wyoming County Road Race near the end of themonth.

June will offer back-to-back multi day events with theEmpire Championships on the 6th and 7th and the Hamburg Race Weekendon the 13th and 14th.  Bothwill be well attended races and look for The Bike Shop Racing Team to continueto post strong results.  Look for moreracing news next month.
